Unlike many colonial hill stations built by the British for military purposes, Kodaikanal was founded in 1845 by American Christian missionaries and British bureaucrats looking to escape the summer heat of the plains. The most famous among them was Reverend John Henry (of the Arcot Mission). The real turning point came when an American, Lieutenant B.S. Ward, built the first bungalow——in 1845. Soon after, the iconic Bryant Park (named after a British forest officer) and the lake were developed.
