The episode introduces us to Hawkins, Indiana, a small town in the 1980s. We meet Mike Wheeler, Will Byers, Dustin Henderson, and Lucas Sinclair, four young friends who are excited about their upcoming Dungeons & Dragons game. However, their fun is disrupted when Will goes missing. As the episode progresses, we're introduced to a mysterious girl with psychokinetic abilities, known as Eleven (or El), who escapes from a government laboratory and becomes a key player in the mystery surrounding Will's disappearance.
