Puducherry has a rich history dating back to the 16th century. The territory was a French colony from 1674 to 1954, and it was known as the "French Quarter" or "White Town." The French established a trading post in Puducherry, which became a major hub for the French East India Company. After India gained independence in 1947, Puducherry continued to be a French colony until 1954, when it was decolonized and became a part of India.
