To approach Zem Aida is first to acknowledge the colonial rupture and creative reassembly of indigenous and African spiritualities in the Caribbean. The Taíno people of the Greater Antilles revered zemís (or cemís ), anthropomorphic or zoomorphic idols embodying ancestral spirits, natural forces, or tribal heroes. These zemís governed agriculture, weather, and war, often residing in caves, rivers, or trees. Meanwhile, in the Fon and Ewe cosmologies of West Africa, Aida Wedo (or Ayida Wedo) is the rainbow serpent, consort of Damballa, the primordial creator serpent. She represents moisture, fertility, movement, and the union of sky and earth. In Haitian Vodou, she is honored as a radiant, gentle lwa associated with rainbows, springs, and the color white. zem aida
